Supervising a learner driver: Helping to teach someone to drive can be extremely rewarding - it can also be a nightmare!

A1 Learners is here to help you, we would  love you to help us teach your family if you can. But we want to help you to do it really well

Want to become more involved in helping us at A1Learners teach your children or partner to drive?

More and more parents, guardians and partners are becoming involved in helping their families learn to drive safely. A1 Learners thinks it's about time we all went back to basics and created a proper partnership with our customers to promote road safety, rather than just finding anyone who can teach cheaply and quickly

Parents and partners are becoming more and more involved in helping family members learn to drive. And it's understandable, these days as roads seem to get more dangerous as each year passes us by.

Sadly, in these difficult times every penny saved on a driving lesson is at best a potential driving test failure or at worse another death on our roads.

So, some basic supervising points first:

  • Are you the right person?
  • You must be over 21 and held a full licence for that type of vehicle for at least 3 years
  • If you hold a full licence for an automatic car you cannot supervise someone learning in a manual car
  • Are you correctly insured? Check with your insurance company
  • You are responsible for any driving offences committed by your driver whilst you are supervising
  • Run a red light and you get the points too
  • Talking on your mobile whilst supervising your driver also earns you points on your licence
  • You cannot, by law, teach for reward even if it's just to cover the cost of extra fuel
  • One of the most fundamental errors that we as "experienced" drivers make is we assume a new driver will pick it up quickly...and really has seen the bus heading towards them from the opposite direction. We can't understand why they haven't seen it!
  • Well, chances are they haven't!
  • And it's probably because they are still worrying about which gear they are in.
  • Essentially, if I hit the bus which gear should I be in. I'm not joking!
  • Don't keep telling your driver. "We're going to hit that car". They probably think the same when you're driving
  • Don't blame your driver for a mistake, blame yourself. You should have seen the problem first!
  • Don't get caught out. New drivers will take at least two seconds longer to spot a problem. It's not their fault. It's called inexperience!
  • Stay calm
  • Road conditions and teaching methods have probably changed since you took your test
  • The driving test is not the "pussy cat" you think you vaguely remember
  • Back in our day we only needed one or two driving lessons before our test...didn't we?
  • Today the DSA recommends at least sixty hours!

So, want to help us?

Sign up now for a two hour educational support drive with A1 Learners today, we're not going to start teaching you push - pull steering! We'll do that bit and we'll teach your new driver the basic stuff before you begin to supervise.
We want you to help us reinforce what';s been taught by us and help build upon the everyday skills of driving

Many of the parents and partners of our customers say they'd love to help us but worry they have too many bad habits or just don't feel confident enough to help us.

Our Educational Support drive, what's involved?

  • We'll take you on a varied drive typical of a test route where possible
  • We'll ask you the kind of questions your learner driver will ask you
  • We'll advise you of the current strengths and weaknesses of your driver
  • We'll advise you how to deal with difficult situations when they arise with your learner
  • We'll run through the manoeuvres with you, including where applicable, bay parking
  • We'll let you have a go at independent driving
  • We'll check your basic knowledge of the Highway Code and bring you up to speed where needed
  • We'll update you with any relevant changes to the driving test
  • It's not a case of pass or fail!
  • It's not even a case of right or wrong
  • It's a case of doing it to our best ability

What's the cost?

In terms of helping us to produce safe, confident and respectful drivers, priceless
In terms of a two hour support drive with us:

£42.50
